DON’T WASTE MONEY ON CHEAP UNDERLAY, HERE’S WHY…

Whether you’re looking for a new carpet or laminate flooring, don’t under estimate the importance of good quality underlay.

Some customers believe that underlay is an optional extra – but it’s an important part of how flooring feels, wears and insulates. The right underlay will increase underfoot comfort as well as the life expectancy of flooring by up to 50%!

“Many British homes who spent their well-earned money on nice-looking and quality floor covering often neglect the idea of a decent underlay.”

Save money on heating bills
If keeping the cold out of your living space is important to you then look no further than underlay. Premium underlays act as a barrier to cold subfloors, keeping your room cosy and your energy bills lower.  Standard or ‘free’ underlays won’t cut it when keeping the warm in and the cold out so always try and level up on your underlay.

Upstairs, downstairs
Consider the type of subfloor you are covering when choosing your underlay.

For upstairs carpets, a 12mm memory foam underlay is ideal. This gives a much more luxurious feel, extends the look and feel of your carpet, and also provides an overall flatter surface (doing away with gaps in between floorboards). For laminate upstairs, choose a 6mm Fibre Board. This will improve noise reduction and is a good insulator, reducing heat leakage from downstairs.

Did you know?

When choosing flooring and underlay on a budget, choose a high-quality underlay and a middle range carpet or laminate. You’ll get a better-looking floor with a better finish that will last longer and save you money in the long term.

Acoustic insulation
Noise is an issue that can be easily overlooked. Whether upstairs or downstairs, it’s important to consider the level of noise your floor may generate.

For carpets, our 11mm Super High Density (SHD) underlay improves noise reduction and provides the best in comfort, warmth and out of all the underlays on the market keeps your flooring looking top notch for the longest.

For laminate, you can prevent a clacking against the base of the floor and the installed flooring with a decent underlay – you’ll be surprised at the difference. A 6mm Fibre Board underlay which is installed upstairs or downstairs will dampen many unnecessary noises.

Damp issues
It is also important to mention that if your downstairs subfloor suffers from dampness, an underlay containing a damp-proof membrane will keep your flooring safe from mold and decay, prevent it from expanding at its seams which in turn, creates lipping and weak spots.

For laminate, our 6mm XL Gold underlay includes high-quality damp protection which also gives optimum warmth insulation and is also the best solution for noise reduction.

Always replace underlay when installing a new flooring as it will show signs of wear and tear especially in high traffic areas and this will impact on the finish and longevity of your new flooring.
