Picture it: your laminate floor has developed an alarming swell typically associated with water damage. You scold yourself for not spotting it before; if you’re lucky, depending on the severity of the damage, you might get away with replacing a plank or two. But more than often, the entire installation may need replacing. Here are methods of keeping your floor in top condition.
Check appliances and plumbing regularly for leaks
Maintaining everything from your washing machine to freezer to dishwasher is essential. These leaks are often slow and can go unnoticed until it’s too late, making them the biggest culprits for floor damage. Slow leaks are often difficult to identify as they are below the laminate where they penetrate into the laminate’s core material. It’s worth having a leak inspector regularly measure the excess moisture by use of a moisture meter.
Testing for concrete moisture
Freshly poured concrete required a minimum of 60 days to dry prior to installation of new flooring. Moisture from the concrete can enter into the back of a laminate floor with the water damage resulting in cupping. This can occur even when a vapour barrier has been used below the laminate floor. All concrete floors should be tested for moisture prior to installation of the laminate covering by a professional floor company.
Avoid heavy mopping
Improper cleaning can cause water damage in the form of swelling at laminate joints. Avoid wet mopping. If you use a wet mop wring the mop as much as possible and immediately dry the floor. Regularly maintain your floor by sweeping it, or use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Every few months give it a thorough mopping with a barely damp sponge mop dipped in hot water, the least likely method of leaving marks.
Sponge spills immediately
Do not allow ANY liquid to sit on the floor for prolonged periods, soak it up with a dry cloth.
