How to protect your floors this party season

With Christmas and New Years Eve just around the corner you might have planned to invite family and friends over to celebrate. Whilst throwing a house party is a great way to get into the festive season or to bring in 2019 you don’t want to be left with lots of damage to your house the following day, particularly if you have just installed new flooring. Here are our top tips to protect your flooring so that you can have a stress free party without having to worry about the state your carpet or laminate might get into.

If there will likely be people wandering in and out to the garden be sure to put down some doormats so people can wipe off any excess dirt and dust from their shoes. You can pick these up quite cheaply at any homeware or DIY store. We recommend putting one mat with sturdy bristles on the outside of the door and a softer one made of carpet inside the door. These will protect those areas of floor that will take the brunt of the damage.

If you have had carpet laid down in your house,  you might have been given some off cuttings from the fitters when they were first installed. These make great use as doormats (as above) or if you have a long strip, can also be used as a rug in areas such as hallways or under tables where you fear something might get spilled. The great thing about carpet off cuts are that they are free and they will match your interior, bonus!

If you have wooden floors, don’t wax the floors right before the party. Despite what you might think, a new layer of wax protection can actually make the floors quite slippery which is likely to cause more trips, falls and spillages. Go against your instinct with this one and leave it until the new year to have your floor buffed, polished and waxed.

Don’t purchase party poppers, the ones with the paper streamers that fly out of the top. Whilst they might be really fun at the time, there is nothing more frustrating than waking up the next morning and finding that tiny pieces of paper have been ripped up and trodden into the carpet. It’s likely that your hoover will struggle to pick these up so you will have to painstakingly pick them up individually by hand. Our advice, don’t buy them.

If you want to be extra careful, it is possible to purchase carpet protector rolls which look like a large roll of cling film. They will cover the entirety of your floor and whilst they don’t look fantastic they will help to prevent any liquids from soaking in. However, our advice would be, if you can, try and keep the party to the rooms in your house that have hard flooring. It is much easier to clean. If you are serving food at the party or you will have a bar, it would be best advised to keep this to the kitchen area where you might have tiles, laminate or something similar.

Your home is supposed to be a place you can relax and enjoy yourself, so the last thing you want to do at a party is constantly be cleaning and mopping up the floor. By putting in place a few of the precautionary measures we have mentioned here, you will be able to enjoy yourself along with your guests and the next morning you’ll still have a home that you can be proud of. With a steam clean and a good hoover, your flooring will be good as new.
